The journey, step by step

What happens on a real rideshare app from sign-up to your first withdrawal, and how long each part takes. In total: 5 days to 4 weeks.

  1. Create your Uber account

Every earning app starts with an account tied to your real name and email. Here you sign up as a demo person, so nothing about you is used.

    Typical estimate About 5 minutes

  2. Log in to Uber

Real apps ask you to confirm your email and often turn on two-step login. Never reuse a password from another site, and only ever type it on the real site.

    Typical estimate A minute

  3. Complete your Uber profile

Your profile is your shop window: photo, headline, skills and price. Riders compare it with everyone else's before they pick you.

Typical estimate 30 to 60 minutes plus vehicle documents

  4. ID and background check

Apps that send you to people's homes or put them in your car check your ID, licence and record. It runs in the background and can take days.

From Uber's published rules Background checks usually take 3 to 10 days

Uber checks ID and runs a background check.

  5. Wait for Uber to approve you

Platforms control who joins. Some let you in instantly, others review profiles, vet applications or keep a waitlist when they have enough people.

From Uber's published rules A quick profile or ID review, usually 1 to 3 days

Uber: Quick profile or ID review. US drivers must meet the local minimum age and need 1 year of US driving experience (3 years if under 25).

  6. Go online and accept a ride on Uber

Requests pop up with a pickup distance and an estimated fare. You have seconds to accept, and the app tracks how often you decline.

Typical estimate Minutes once online, in a busy area

  7. Pick up and drop off the rider

Confirm the rider, follow the route and end the trip at the destination. Safety and courtesy drive your rating.

Typical estimate About 15 to 30 minutes per trip

  8. Get approved and reviewed

The rider confirms the trip is done and leaves a rating. Early reviews matter most: they decide who sees you next.

    Typical estimate Rated at drop-off

  9. Uber takes its fee

What the rider pays is not what you keep. The platform fee comes off first, then your own costs.

    Typical estimate Instant

  10. Wait for Uber to clear the money

New earnings sit as "pending" for a while so refunds and disputes can be handled. You cannot withdraw them yet.

From Uber's published rules Weekly, or up to 6x daily with Instant Pay ($1.75 per cash out, free in New York City)

Payout speed on Uber: Weekly, or up to 6x daily with Instant Pay ($1.75 per cash out, free in New York City)

  11. Reach the minimum payout

Many platforms only let you withdraw above a threshold. Small tasks may mean several trips before you can cash out.

From Uber's published rules One trip is enough here

Minimum payout on Uber: $1 of available earnings for Instant Pay.

  12. Withdraw from Uber
