The journey, step by step

What happens on a real tutoring platform from sign-up to your first withdrawal, and how long each part takes. In total: 5 days to 6 weeks.

  1. Create your Preply account

Every earning app starts with an account tied to your real name and email. Here you sign up as a demo person, so nothing about you is used.

    Typical estimate About 5 minutes

  2. Log in to Preply

Real apps ask you to confirm your email and often turn on two-step login. Never reuse a password from another site, and only ever type it on the real site.

    Typical estimate A minute

  3. Complete your Preply profile

Your profile is your shop window: photo, headline, skills and price. Students compare it with everyone else's before they pick you.

Typical estimate 1 to 3 hours including an intro video

  4. Verify your identity

Most platforms check your ID before you can withdraw money. It stops fraud and is required by payment laws.

From Preply's published rules ID checks often take minutes, sometimes a day or two

    Preply checks ID.

  5. Wait for Preply to approve you

Platforms control who joins. Some let you in instantly, others review profiles, vet applications or keep a waitlist when they have enough people.

From Preply's published rules A quick profile or ID review, usually 1 to 3 days

Preply: Quick profile or ID review. Must be 18. Not open to residents of Iran, Sudan, Cuba, Syria, North Korea, Crimea, Russia, or Belarus. Profile review within 3 business days.

  6. Get booked by a student on Preply

Students browse tutors and book a slot that matches your calendar. Many start with a cheaper or discounted trial lesson.

Typical estimate Days to weeks until a first student books

  7. Teach the lesson

A good lesson has a plan: warm up, check level, practise, set homework. Students rebook when they see progress.

    Typical estimate One 50-minute lesson

  8. Get approved and reviewed

The student confirms the lesson is done and leaves a rating. Early reviews matter most: they decide who sees you next.

Typical estimate Usually confirmed within a day

  9. Preply takes its fee

What the student pays is not what you keep. The platform fee comes off first, then your own costs.

    From Preply's published rules Instant

Fees on Preply: 18-33% commission after the trial. Each new student's trial lesson is 100%

  10. Wait for Preply to clear the money

New earnings sit as "pending" for a while so refunds and disputes can be handled. You cannot withdraw them yet.

From Preply's published rules On demand once balance clears

  11. Reach the minimum payout

Many platforms only let you withdraw above a threshold. Small tasks may mean several lessons before you can cash out.

From Preply's published rules One lesson is enough here

Minimum payout on Preply: PayPal none, Wise or bank $10, Payoneer $20-$23.

  12. Withdraw from Preply
