How to get started on Upwork
Upwork rewards complete, specific profiles — start there before sending a single proposal.
Set up a profile that passes review
Create your account with your real name and a clear headshot. Pick one main service line rather than listing everything you can do — Upwork approves and ranks specialists better than generalists. Write a title and overview around the outcome you deliver, add portfolio pieces, and set an hourly rate in line with your market.
Send better proposals, not more proposals
Connects (the tokens proposals cost) run out quickly, so target jobs where you genuinely match every requirement. Open your proposal by addressing the client problem in the first two lines — clients read only the preview at first. Two short paragraphs and one relevant work sample beat a page of biography.
Protect your first reviews
Your first five reviews decide your visibility for months. Deliver early, communicate often, and ask satisfied clients to close the contract promptly — open contracts with no activity drag your stats down. Once you have a 100 percent Job Success Score, raise your rate.
