Filipino freelancers can send Upwork earnings straight to a peso bank account with Direct to Local Bank for $0.99, or route them into GCash. GCash works three ways, as a Virtual US Account added to Upwork as a US bank, as a Payoneer cash-in or as a PayPal cash-in, and each converts dollars at a different cost. Figures below come from the Upwork, GCash, PayPal, Payoneer and Wise help pages as of September 2026.

Upwork does not list GCash or Maya as withdrawal methods. The GCash routes above are documented in GCash's own help center. No Maya route is documented in Upwork's help center, so Maya is not covered here. Upwork accepts digital bank accounts such as Wise depending on your location, and the way to check is to enter the details as a new withdrawal method.

Worked example: withdrawing $500

This example assumes PHP 62.50 per US dollar, a rate chosen for illustration on 12 September 2026, not a live quote. The same rate is used in every row so the fees can be compared directly.

RouteFees takenApprox. pesos received
Direct to Local Bank$0.99PHP 31,188
GCash Virtual US Account$2.99 Upwork feePHP 31,063
Wise, then a peso bank account$2.99 Upwork fee, about $3 Wise feeabout PHP 30,876
PayPal, then GCash3.0% PayPal conversion, 1% GCash cash-in, plus Upwork's PayPal feeabout PHP 30,009
U.S. Dollar Wire Transfer$50PHP 28,125, before bank charges

Direct to Local Bank and GCash both convert with a margin that neither publishes as a percentage, so the real gap between them depends on the rates shown on the day. A 1% difference in the rate is worth about PHP 312 on this withdrawal, which is more than the $2 difference in their Upwork fees. The PayPal route costs the most in this example because two percentage fees stack. Model other amounts in the fee calculator.

How to withdraw to a Philippine bank

  1. Enter your tax information under Manage finances > Tax information.
  2. Go to Account settings on desktop, or Settings in the mobile app, open Withdrawals and choose Add a method.
  3. Click Set up next to Direct to Local Bank and enter your account details.
  4. Enter your bank's head office BRSTN code, not your branch's, or you will get an error. Upwork's list includes 010530667 for Banco De Oro, 010269996 for Metrobank and 010350025 for Landbank, but confirm the code with your bank.
  5. Choose an optional withdrawal schedule, click Next and wait three calendar days for the security hold to end.
  6. Go to Manage finances > Withdraw earnings and select Withdraw now.

How to withdraw to GCash

  1. In the GCash app, tap the Profile icon on your dashboard to see your Virtual US Account details: account holder name, account number and ACH routing number.
  2. In Upwork, open Account settings > Withdrawals > Add a method and click Set up next to Direct to U.S. Bank.
  3. Enter the GCash details, using the account holder name exactly as GCash shows it. It must also match your verified Upwork name.
  4. After the three-day hold, withdraw as usual. If your GCash conversion mode is set to automatic, incoming dollars are converted to pesos after they arrive.

For Payoneer, link it in GCash under Profile > My Linked Accounts > Payoneer, then use Cash In > Global Banks and Partners > Payoneer. For PayPal, your PayPal account must be Philippine-based and verified and your GCash account Fully Verified. Convert the PayPal balance to pesos first, then use Cash In > Global Banks and Partners > PayPal.

Compliance notes

  • VAT. Upwork charges freelancers in the Philippines 12% VAT on the Freelancer Service Fee, Connects and memberships. On $100 of service fees that is $12. Entering a TIN registered for VAT under Manage finances > Tax information, and confirming the registration, stops Upwork collecting it.
  • Service fee. Upwork's Freelancer Service Fee ranges from 0% to 15% per contract and is locked in once a proposal, offer or contract is sent.
  • Name matching. Every receiving account must be in your verified Upwork name, including middle names.
  • GCash limits. A Fully Verified GCash account has a PHP 100,000 wallet limit, which can rise to PHP 500,000 when you meet GCash's conditions, such as linking and cashing in from PayPal or Payoneer. Conversions from the Virtual US Account follow those limits, and once you hit them you can convert again from the start of the next month.
  • Virtual US Account rules. It accepts only US domestic ACH and Fedwire payments in dollars, not SWIFT. Fedwire deposits cost $15, and the account can pay out only to your own linked account.

Common problems and fixes

  • BRSTN error. You entered a branch code. Use the head office BRSTN code for your bank, since subsidiary banks share it too.
  • Method not usable yet. New or re-added withdrawal methods stay on a three-day security hold.
  • Name mismatch flag. Add a method in your verified name, or reply to Upwork's email to show you are an authorized user.
  • Transfer returned. Money sent to an invalid or closed account usually comes back within 4 to 8 business days, minus the withdrawal fee and any return fees if your details were wrong.
  • Bank transfer missing. After 8 full business days, ask Upwork for a free trace and attach a bank statement screenshot covering the days since the withdrawal. US and Philippine bank holidays can delay bank methods.
  • PayPal cash-in fails. Log in to PayPal to check for limits or required actions, then relink PayPal to GCash if needed.
  • Digital bank payment stuck. Upwork warns that digital bank payments can take longer to trace, and sometimes cannot be traced at all.
