Step 1 of 10

Pick one main service before you write anything

Clients search for a specific service, not for a general "freelancer". Decide the one service you most want to be hired for. Everything on your profile should support it.

  1. 1Service
  2. 2Title
  3. 3Overview
  4. 4Skills
  5. 5Portfolio
  6. 6Rate

As of May 28, 2026, Upwork no longer offers Specialized Profiles. You now have one main profile, and Upwork highlights the work and skills that best match each client's search. So you do not need separate profiles for each service. Just keep your main profile focused.

You can choose up to four service categories in Profile settings. Pick the ones closest to your main service.

Tip: If you offer several related services, lead with the strongest one and mention the others lower in your overview.
Checklist
Quick checkYou offer logo design and social media graphics. Do you need a separate Specialized Profile for each in 2026?
Show the answer

No. Specialized Profiles were removed, and your main profile now highlights the most relevant work for each client. Upwork says Specialized Profiles are no longer available as of May 28, 2026 and the main profile now adapts to each client. (Upwork Help)

Step 2 of 10

Upload a real, clear profile photo

You must upload a profile photo before you can send proposals. It must be a real picture of you. Upwork uses it to help verify your identity, and clients use it to see who they are talking to.

$ / hr123456
  1. Photo: a clear, friendly photo of your face
  2. Headline: the service you sell and who it is for
  3. Rate: an hourly or starting price you can sustain
  4. Overview: the first lines show in search, so lead with the client's problem
  5. Skills: the exact words clients search for
  6. Portfolio: two or three real samples of your work
A generic profile layout. Each platform arranges these parts a little differently.

Go to Your profile, select the pencil icon next to your photo, choose a file, crop it to your face, and save.

  • Use a clear, headshot-style photo.
  • Face the camera with good light.
  • Do not use sunglasses, logos, clip-art, group pictures or digitally altered images. Upwork does not allow them.
Tip: Ask someone else to take the photo against a plain wall near a window.
Checklist
Step 3 of 10

Write a title that names your niche

Your title is the first thing clients read about you. Upwork advises a specific, searchable title that describes your niche. Highlight your main talent instead of listing every skill you have.

To edit it, go to Your profile and select the pencil icon next to your title.

A good title answers "what do you do, and for whom?" in a few words.

Example: Shopify Store Setup and Product Page Design for Small Brands
Watch out: Do not overstate your experience. False or misleading profile information is against Upwork's Terms of Service.
Checklist
Try itWrite your headline
  • Between 35 and 70 characters
  • Says who you help (for example “for small shops”)
  • Includes a number or result, if you have one (years, projects, a metric)
  • Skips filler words like “hardworking” or “guru”
  • No ALL CAPS or symbol spam

Rule-of-thumb checks that run in your browser. Nothing is sent anywhere.

Step 4 of 10

Write an overview that speaks to clients

The overview is where you explain how you help clients. Upwork notes that only about the first 250 characters show in search results. So put the most useful sentence first.

A simple structure works well:

  1. One line on what you do and who you help.
  2. Two or three lines on how you work and what the client gets.
  3. Proof, such as a past project, a tool you know well, or a certificate.
  4. A short line inviting the client to message you.

Never add your email, phone number or outside links to your services. Sharing contact details on your profile is against Upwork's Terms of Service.

Tip: Upwork suggests asking a friend to read your profile before you publish it.
Checklist
Step 5 of 10

Add skills that match the work you want

Skills help clients decide if you fit their project. You can add up to 15 skills and drag them into the order you want.

Go to Your profile, scroll to Skills, select the pencil icon, start typing, and pick the best match from the list. Use the English name of each skill. If you cannot find one, try a simpler word or a synonym.

Also set your English level honestly in the Languages section, and add any other languages you speak.

Checklist
Quick checkHow many skills can you add to your Upwork profile?
Show the answer

Up to 15. Upwork's profile guide says you can add up to 15 skills and choose their order. (Upwork Help)

Step 6 of 10

Add two or three portfolio items

A portfolio shows clients your real work. Find the Portfolio section on your profile and select the plus button.

123456

Drag to look around the wall. Six pieces is plenty to start.

For each item, add a title (up to 70 characters), your role, a short project description (up to 600 characters) and up to five skill tags. Then add images, video, audio, documents or links. You can save it as a draft and publish when it looks right.

  • Show your best work, not everything.
  • Only add work you did yourself. Taking credit for other people's work breaks Upwork's rules.
  • Images work best at 1000 x 750 pixels, and must be at least 400 x 300 pixels.
Tip: No clients yet? A small sample project you made for practice is fine, as long as you say it is a sample.
Checklist
Step 7 of 10

Set a starting hourly rate

Your profile rate is a starting point, not a fixed rule. Clients use it to get a sense of your pricing and to filter search results. You can change it any time, and you can quote a different rate in each proposal.

Clients pay a week$250
You keep a week$213
About 4 weeks$850
Fee starts at 15%, the highest rate on our Upwork listing. Change it to match your case. Before tax and payout fees. Not a promise of income: it only shows the maths. Try the full hourly rate calculator.

Go to Your profile, hover over your rate and select the pencil icon. When you enter a rate, Upwork shows the Freelancer Service Fee and the amount you will receive. The fee can vary, so check the number on that screen rather than guessing.

Use our hourly rate calculator to work out a rate that covers your costs.

Step 8 of 10

Fill in history, education and certifications

Clients trust profiles that look complete. Add your employment history, including student jobs, internships and volunteer work. Add your education and any certifications. Upwork contracts appear in your work history automatically later.

You can also add a short video introduction. Upload it to YouTube, turn off monetization, and paste the link in the Video introduction section.

Tip: Work history that is not an exact match can still help. Mention the skills you used there that relate to your service.
Checklist
Step 9 of 10

Set your availability and keep the profile fresh

Upwork advises setting your profile to "available" when you can take work, so you receive invites. When you are busy, set it to "not available" to avoid unwanted messages. If your profile was set to private because you were inactive, switch it back to public.

Later, two signals help clients trust you:

  • Rising Talent is a badge for promising new freelancers. You do not apply. Upwork adds it if you qualify, for example by being invited by Upwork, or by having a 4.8+ star average and at least $250 USD earned in the past 12 months, plus a 100% complete profile, a verified ID and a valid withdrawal method (as of 2026).
  • Job Success Score (JSS) appears once you have enough work history on Upwork. If you have one, it must be 90% or higher to keep Rising Talent.
Watch out: Badges and scores are earned over time. A complete profile helps, but no setting guarantees invites.
Checklist
Quick checkWhen does the Rising Talent badge get added?
Show the answer

Automatically, when Upwork sees you meet its criteria. Upwork says no action is needed and it will email you if you qualify. (Upwork Help)

Your profile is ready. Now practise sending focused proposals. Read write a winning proposal and build a portfolio with no clients if you need more samples.
