Get ready to open your shop
You must set up your Etsy shop on a desktop web browser. After that, you can manage it in the Etsy Seller app.
Have these ready before you start:
- A bank account to receive payouts. Etsy cannot send sale money to PayPal or to a card.
- A debit or credit card to pay Etsy's fees.
- A government ID that is not expired and matches the name on your bank account.
- A residential address.
In some countries, such as Pakistan, Japan or Brazil, Etsy lets sellers connect a Payoneer account instead of a bank. If Etsy Payments is not available where you live, you usually cannot open a shop. Check the help page for your country.
Set shop preferences and a shop name
Go to Etsy.com/sell and select Get started. Choose your shop language, country and currency. You cannot change the shop language later, so choose carefully.
Then pick a shop name. It must be 4 to 20 characters, with no spaces or special characters. It cannot be in use already, contain profanity, or copy someone else's trademark.

Take and upload your photos
You must add your first listing before you can open your shop. The listing form starts with photos.

A generic sketch, not Etsy's real layout- Cover image: your own work, clear at thumbnail size
- Title: what the buyer gets, in their words
- Reviews: start at zero, so the rest must build trust
- Price: what buyers compare first
You can add up to 20 photos and up to 2 videos of 5 to 15 seconds each, as of 2026. Etsy recommends photos at least 2000 pixels wide.
Good beginner photos:
- The whole item on a plain background.
- A close-up of texture or detail.
- The item in use, or next to something that shows its size.
- Any variations, such as colours.
Choose your best photo as the thumbnail. It is what shoppers see first in search.
Pick the category and write the title
Etsy suggests a category from your photos. Confirm it or search for a better one. Then say whether the item is physical or digital, and when it was made.
Your title can be up to 140 characters, but Etsy suggests fewer than 15 words. Lead with what the item is, then key details like material, size or colour. The listing web address is set when you first publish, and does not change if you edit the title later.
Write the description and add tags
Write a description that answers buyer questions: what it is, size, materials, care instructions and what is included. Use words shoppers might search for, written naturally.
Next, fill in attributes like colour and material. They depend on your category. Then add tags. You can add up to 13 tags, as of 2026. Use short phrases a buyer would type, and do not repeat the same words everywhere.
If you offer sizes or colours, add them as variations. You can also allow personalization, such as a name engraved.

Price your item with fees in mind
Etsy shows a profit estimate as you type a price. Make sure your price covers materials, packaging, your time and Etsy's fees.
The main fees, as of 2026:
- Listing fee: $0.20 USD per listing, whether or not it sells.
- Transaction fee: 6.5% of the total order, including shipping and gift wrap.
- Payment processing fee: a fixed amount plus a percentage. It varies by country. For bank accounts in the US it is 3% plus $0.25 per order.
Offsite Ads fees apply only to orders that come from Etsy's ads on other sites. Some countries also have deposit fees. Use our fee calculator to check your numbers.
Set up shipping
In the Pricing and shipping tab, choose a processing profile. Pick "made to order" or "ready to ship" and set how long it takes you to prepare the item.
Then choose or create a shipping profile. You need your origin postal code, the shipping services you use for domestic and international orders, and a processing time. For calculated shipping, enter the packed weight and size of the item.
If you sell to the EU or Northern Ireland, extra product safety (GPSR) information may be required for some sellers.
Connect payments and billing
Etsy Payments is the main way to get paid on Etsy. Buyers can pay with cards, PayPal and other local options, and your sale money goes to your Etsy Payment account first, then to your bank on your deposit schedule.
- Buyer
- Etsy Payment account
- Your bank
During setup:
- Connect your bank account. US sellers verify through Plaid.
- Add a card for billing so Etsy can charge your fees.
- Pay the one-time shop set-up fee.
- Verify your identity with a government ID and a selfie.
- Turn on two-factor authentication. Etsy requires it.
Publish your listing and open your shop
In the Settings tab, choose a shop section, decide whether to feature the listing, and pick automatic or manual renewal.
Select Publish. Then open your shop. Etsy says new listings can take up to 48 hours to appear in search and categories.
Next step
Add a few more listings so shoppers have more to browse, and learn to handle buyer questions well. Read the guide on how to start selling on Etsy and the tutorial on receiving international payments.
Done! You finished every step.
Nice work. Keep the momentum with one of these next.
