Tip: fees and payout rules change often. Check the numbers on the platform's page and work out what you'll keep before you commit.

Payoneer suits freelancers paid by Fiverr and other marketplaces that pay into it, while Wise usually costs less when clients pay by bank transfer. As of September 2026, Wise receives domestic USD, EUR and GBP transfers free and converts at the mid-market rate plus a fee from 0.23%. Payoneer charges 1% to receive in a currency that isn't local to you and 1.2% to 4% on most withdrawals that cross currencies or borders.

Fees side by side

Payoneer figures come from its pricing page (last updated 1 January 2026) and Wise figures from its receiving and pricing pages. Both say the exact fee depends on your country and is shown before you confirm.

Payoneer's annual fee depends on where you live. In Nigeria, Kenya, the Philippines, Pakistan, the UK and the other countries on its updated rule, it has applied since 23 February 2026 whenever 12 months pass without 6,000 USD received. Elsewhere it applies only after 12 months with no transaction. Payoneer can also bill clients through payment requests, at up to 3.99% plus 0.49 USD when the client pays by card, or 1% by US ACH debit.

Which platforms pay into each

PlatformPayoneerWise
UpworkYes, outside the US and India, for a small per-transfer feeWhere Upwork accepts the account, including ACH through Direct to U.S. Bank at $2.99 for non-US tax addresses
FiverrYes, $3 to a Payoneer Account or $1 to $3 by Bank Transfer (via Payoneer)No, Fiverr pays only to Payoneer and PayPal
MercorNo, Mercor does not use PayoneerYes, in countries where Stripe Connect payouts are not available
Direct clientsReceiving accounts in 70+ currencies, plus payment requestsAccount details in 22 currencies, per its pricing page

Upwork says it accepts digital bank accounts such as Wise depending on location, but may not be able to trace payment problems with them. Fiverr is the clearest split: its only payout options are PayPal, two Payoneer methods and a legacy card, so Wise simply isn't an option there. Mercor assigns Stripe or Wise automatically by location.

Worked example: a $1,000 payment from a US client

Take a freelancer outside the US who invoices a US company for $1,000, paid by domestic ACH transfer, and then moves the money to a local bank account.

  • Wise: receiving by ACH is free. Converting and sending 1,000 USD from a Wise balance to a Kenyan shilling bank account was quoted at 11.36 USD on 12 September 2026, leaving the equivalent of about $988.64 at the mid-market rate.
  • Payoneer: receiving dollars in a non-local currency costs 1%, so $990 lands. Withdrawing to a local bank with a conversion costs 1.2% to 4% on the public pricing page, leaving the equivalent of roughly $978 to $950.

For marketplace income the gap narrows or reverses. Fiverr cannot pay Wise at all, and Upwork charges $2.99 per ACH withdrawal for non-US tax addresses, compared with its small per-transfer fee for Payoneer. Payoneer's withdrawal FAQ says conversion fees are included in the rate, so compare the local amount shown before you confirm rather than the headline fee. Test your own numbers in the fee calculator.

Speed and safeguards

  • Payoneer says most withdrawals reach a local bank within one to three business days, sometimes the same day, and that new bank accounts are usually reviewed within 3 business days. Upwork says its transfers to Payoneer typically arrive within 24 hours. Payoneer lists licences in the US, EU, UK, Hong Kong, Japan, Australia and Singapore.
  • Wise publishes the regulator behind its service in each country on a dedicated help page. Speed depends on the route. Mercor, for example, says its Wise payouts typically arrive within about an hour after you accept the transfer.
  • Withdrawal accounts. Payoneer requires the bank account you withdraw to be in your own name or your registered business name, and it shows the fee and exchange rate before you confirm.

Country availability

  • Payoneer covers 190+ countries and territories and 70+ currencies. Its flat 1.50 USD same-currency withdrawal is limited to a listed set that includes all EU countries, the US, UK, Kenya, the Philippines, Malaysia, Mexico and Vietnam, but not Nigeria.
  • Wise shows what it offers based on where you live, so features differ by country. Its Philippines site lists peso and USD account details, and Wise Pilipinas is licensed by the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas. Wise's page on how it is regulated in each country does not list Nigeria or Kenya, so confirm what the sign-up flow offers for your country before relying on it.
  • Sending home: Wise quoted transfers to bank accounts in Nigeria, Kenya and the Philippines on 12 September 2026, and for all three its send pages list local bank accounts as the delivery method.

Choose Payoneer if

  • You sell on Fiverr, which cannot pay into Wise.
  • Several marketplaces pay you and you want a single USD balance.
  • You receive at least 6,000 USD a year, which avoids the 29.95 USD annual fee in countries on Payoneer's updated rule.
  • You want the tools Payoneer lists, such as payment requests, daily, weekly or monthly auto-withdrawals and withdrawals at a target exchange rate.
  • Wise account details are not offered where you live.

Choose Wise if

  • Clients can pay by domestic transfer in USD, EUR or GBP, which Wise receives free.
  • You convert often, since Wise uses the mid-market rate plus a fee from 0.23%.
  • Your platform pays to bank details, such as Upwork through Direct to U.S. Bank or Mercor in countries without Stripe Connect.
  • Your income is small or irregular, because Wise lists no account fee.

Nothing stops you from holding both, for example Fiverr earnings in Payoneer and direct-client invoices in Wise. For more options, see the best payment platforms for freelancers.
