Truly passive online income exists, but it is small: bandwidth-sharing apps pay around $0.10 per GB, usually a few dollars a month. Bigger passive income comes from things you build once and keep selling, such as stock photos, print-on-demand designs, templates, courses or a content site, and those take months of unpaid work first. Anyone promising large income for no time or skill is selling something.
How to choose
- Truly passive or build once. Only a few options earn with no ongoing work, and they pay the least. Everything else is front-loaded work that may keep paying later.
- Skills. Bandwidth apps need none. Stock and print-on-demand need photography or design skills. Courses need expertise and teaching ability. Affiliate and ad income need writing or video plus search or social traffic.
- Startup cost. Most options are free to join. Your real cost is equipment, such as a camera, design software or a powerful GPU, plus time.
- Time to first payment. Bandwidth apps can reach a minimum payout in weeks. Stock and design uploads may sell in the first month or not for a year. Content sites often take many months to draw traffic.
- Where you live. Payout methods vary. Redbubble pays by PayPal or to US, UK and Australian banks only. Shutterstock pays through PayPal, Payoneer or Skrill.
- Risk. Build-once income can drop overnight when a platform changes royalties or search. Diversify once something works.
Truly passive: bandwidth and computing apps
The work: install an app and leave your computer or phone connected. The company routes its customers' web traffic through your connection, so that traffic appears to come from your IP address.
Realistic earnings:
- PacketStream: pays $0.10 per GB you share, with PayPal payouts processed within a week. At 100 GB a month, that is $10.
- Honeygain: pays in credits, with 10,000 credits worth $10. You can cash out at $20, and payouts arrive in about 2 to 3 business days.
- Pawns.app: pays out from $5. Its surveys, at $1 or more per 5 to 10 minutes, are not passive.
- Vast.ai: earns more but needs a powerful GPU. Hosts set their own rental price and are invoiced weekly once they pass $20. Vast.ai says earnings depend on hardware, uptime and demand and cannot be guaranteed. Electricity and hardware wear come out of your profit.

Build once, sell many times: stock photos and video
The work: shooting, editing, keywording and uploading. After approval, a file can sell for years.
Realistic earnings: Shutterstock pays 15% to 40% of each license depending on how many you sold that calendar year, and never less than $0.10 per download. Adobe Stock pays 33% on photos, vectors and illustrations and 35% on video, which works out to about $0.33 to $3.30 per image download depending on the buyer's plan. A hundred downloads at the lowest rates can be just $10 to $33, so earnings grow only with a large, well-keyworded portfolio.
Payout speed: Shutterstock pays monthly once you pass a minimum you set between $25 and $2,000.

Build once: print-on-demand designs
The work: creating designs that the platform prints on shirts, stickers and mugs, then ships for you.
Realistic earnings: on Redbubble, a 20% markup on a $20 T-shirt base price earns $4. After Redbubble's platform fee of 20% for Premium accounts or 50% for Standard accounts, you keep $3.20 or $2.00. Payouts start once your balance reaches $10. Redbubble says not every design appears in its search, so most sellers promote their own links.

Build once: templates, digital products and courses
The work: making Canva templates, Notion pages, spreadsheets, fonts or courses and listing them.
Realistic earnings: Canva Creators pays from a monthly royalty pool based on how much your templates are used. Gumroad charges 10% plus $0.50 per sale plus card processing, so a $10 product nets you under $9. Udemy splits revenue by sales channel and cut instructors' share in 2024, so check its current terms. Courses need updating, and sales usually fade without marketing.

Build once: affiliate links and ad-supported content
The work: writing articles or making videos that earn from ads or commissions.
Realistic earnings: Amazon Associates pays standard US commissions of up to 10% in categories such as Luxury Beauty, and 0% in others, including gift cards. Google AdSense publishers receive 80% of revenue after the advertiser platform's fee, or about 68% when advertisers buy through Google Ads. Mediavine, a premium ad network, pays a 75% revenue share to sites launched after January 1, 2026 that earn under $100,000 a year. All three depend on traffic, which takes months of consistent publishing to build.
Platforms: Amazon Associates, Google AdSense, Mediavine. Lists: best affiliate networks, best ad networks.
Often called passive, but not really
- Renting a room. Airbnb says the typical US host earned $15,600 in 2025, but hosting means messages, cleaning and check-ins.
- Microtask and survey apps. A study of 2,676 Mechanical Turk workers found a median of about $2 an hour. It is active work at low pay.
- Music releases. Distribution through services such as DistroKid is one-off work, but streams pay only if people listen.
- Memberships and newsletters. Platforms such as Patreon and Substack pay monthly, but subscribers leave when new posts stop, so they are recurring rather than passive.

First steps this week
- Decide which bucket fits you: zero effort for pocket money, or build-once work for bigger upside.
- If you choose bandwidth apps, install one or two reputable ones on a home connection whose terms allow it, and check the balance after 30 days.
- If you have photos or designs, upload your 10 strongest to one stock site and one print-on-demand site this week.
- If you have expertise, outline a small digital product, such as a template or checklist, that you could finish in a weekend.
- Track hours spent against money earned for three months before investing in more gear.
What to avoid
- "Earn while you sleep" courses. The FTC warns that an offer of a lot of money quickly for little work is almost certainly a scam. Reported job scam losses reached $501 million in 2024.
- Paying to unlock earnings. Legitimate passive apps are free to join and never ask for a deposit.
- Unknown bandwidth apps. Other people's traffic runs through your IP address. Use established apps, read their terms and check your internet provider's rules on sharing your connection.
- Crypto point schemes. Some apps pay in tokens whose value can swing or disappear. Count only what you can withdraw as cash.
- AI-generated upload schemes. Courses promising easy money from mass AI images skip the rules: Shutterstock does not accept AI-generated images from contributors, and other sites set their own limits.
