Tip: not every platform here accepts people in every country. Check which ones you can join with your country and age before you sign up anywhere.
You can make money online without investment by selling your time or skills on free-to-join platforms such as Prolific, Fiverr, Cambly and Rev. What you do need is a phone or computer, an internet connection and a payout account. Ideas that promise fast income, such as dropshipping, Amazon stores and paid-ads businesses, almost always need money upfront for stock, subscriptions or advertising.
How to choose when money is tight
- Count your real startup cost. Free to join is not always free to earn. Upwork sells Connects to bid on jobs, and Etsy charges per listing.
- Count the wait. With no savings, a 14-day clearing period or a monthly royalty cycle matters. The table below shows how fast each option first pays.
- Use what you have. A phone camera, fluent English, typing speed, or things you no longer use are all zero-cost assets.
- Check your country. Payout methods differ. PayPal is not available everywhere, and our guides to Payoneer and Payoneer vs Wise cover the alternatives.
9 ways to earn with zero startup cost
1. Paid studies and surveys
Free to join, and the pay floor is published.
Prolific requires researchers to pay at least $8 (or £6) an hour, and you can cash out from $6 or £6.
Swagbucks and
YouGov pay in points you redeem for cash or gift cards. Microtask sites like
Amazon Mechanical Turk are also free, but a peer-reviewed study found a median of only about $2 an hour there. See microtask sites.
2. Website and app testing
All you need is a computer or phone with a microphone.
UserTesting shows the reward before each test and pays through PayPal, usually 14 days later.
Userlytics and
Trymata are similar. See testing platforms.
3. AI training
DataAnnotation says general projects start at $25 to $30+ an hour, the highest starting rate in this guide, with PayPal payouts a few days after you request them. It costs nothing but a careful hour on the Starter Assessment, which you can only take once.
Outlier and
Alignerr also recruit without fees. See AI training platforms.
4. Freelancing a service
Fiverr is free to join and keeps 20% of each order, releasing your share 14 days after completion. Some new Fiverr sellers pay a one-time ID verification fee, so check before you publish.
Upwork charges a 0% to 15% service fee and sells Connects at $0.15 each to bid on jobs. A few dollars of Connects is the only cost many new freelancers face. Our Fiverr fees guide shows exactly what you keep.
5. Online tutoring
Cambly pays $0.17 a minute ($10.20 an hour) for English conversation, pays weekly and asks for no certificate or degree.
Preply is free to join but keeps the whole first trial lesson with each new student, which is effectively your acquisition cost, then 33% of later lessons, falling to 18%. A laptop with a webcam and headset is enough to start. See tutoring platforms.
6. Selling what you already own
Your first stock is free if it is already in your cupboard.
Vinted charges sellers no selling fee, since the buyer pays a Buyer Protection fee of 5% plus £0.70 in the UK, and pays you once the buyer confirms.
Facebook Marketplace and
eBay suit bigger items. Etsy is different. It charges $0.20 per listing, 6.5% per sale plus payment processing, and some new shops pay a one-time set-up fee, so it only makes sense once you have handmade or vintage items to sell. See the Etsy guide.
7. Transcription and captions
Rev pays transcriptionists $0.40 to $1.10 per audio minute, weekly through PayPal, after a skills test, and currently keeps a waitlist. Good headphones help but are not required.
GoTranscript and
TranscribeMe are alternatives in transcription and translation platforms.
8. Print-on-demand designs
The platform prints and ships, so you never buy stock.
Redbubble is free, needs five public designs to open your shop, takes a 20% or 50% platform fee depending on your account tier and pays monthly once your balance reaches $10.
TeePublic and
Society6 work the same way. Free design tools are enough to start. See the Redbubble guide.
9. Stock photos from your phone
Shutterstock is free to join, accepts JPEGs of 4 megapixels or more, which most phone cameras produce, and pays 15% to 40% of each license, never less than $0.10 a download. Payouts are monthly once you pass a minimum you choose between $25 and $2,000. It also rejects AI-generated images from contributors. See the Shutterstock guide.

Ideas that need money first
These can work, but not with an empty wallet.
- Selling on Amazon. The Individual plan costs $0.99 per item sold and the Professional plan $39.99 a month, on top of referral fees, and inventory has to be bought first. See how to start selling on Amazon.
- Your own online store. Shopify charges a monthly plan fee priced by country after a short trial, and a store without traffic usually needs paid ads. See setting up a Shopify store.
- Driving and delivery. Rideshare and courier apps are free to join but need a vehicle, fuel, insurance and maintenance. Amazon says most Flex drivers earn $18 to $25 an hour before those costs.
- Paid courses about making money online. You pay upfront for a promise. A free platform guide and a real first sale teach more.
Your first steps this week
- Open a free PayPal or Payoneer account in your own name.
- Join Prolific and UserTesting and complete every profile question.
- Take the DataAnnotation Starter Assessment in a quiet hour.
- List three unused items on Vinted or Facebook Marketplace.
- Choose one free skill-based option, such as a Fiverr Gig, a Cambly application or five Redbubble designs, and finish it before starting another.
- Keep a note of every fee you are asked to pay. If a platform asks for money before you have earned anything, stop and check it against the list below.
What to avoid
- Pay-to-start jobs. The FTC says honest employers never ask you to pay to get a job. Fees for training, certificates, "registration" or job lists are red flags.
- Deposits to unlock earnings. Task apps that show growing balances, then demand a top-up before you can withdraw, are scams. The FTC says reported job scam losses rose from $90 million in 2020 to $286 million in 2023, and it counted about 20,000 task scam reports in the first half of 2024.
- Crypto "jobs". The FTC says people now report losing more money to job scams paid in cryptocurrency than by any other payment method.
- "Investment" platforms with guaranteed returns. Any site promising daily profits on money you deposit is not a way to earn without investment.
- Fake checks. Never deposit a check from a new "employer" and send part of it back.
