Tip: not every platform here accepts people in every country. Check which ones you can join with your country and age before you sign up anywhere.

With no experience, start with paid research studies, app testing, AI training tests, selling what you own and simple gigs on Fiverr or Upwork. None of these pays much at first. Prolific sets a floor of $8 an hour for studies, while Fiverr holds new earnings for 14 days, so the fastest real progress comes from pairing one quick-paying option with one skill you build over a few months.

How to choose your first option

Four questions narrow the list quickly.

  • What can you already do? Typing accurately, speaking English clearly, writing a tidy paragraph or taking sharp phone photos all count. "No experience" usually means nothing to show a client yet, not zero skills.
  • What can you spend? Everything below is free to join unless noted. Driving and delivery need a vehicle, and selling needs something to sell.
  • How soon do you need money? Local selling and shift apps pay within days. Freelance marketplaces hold earnings for 5 to 14 days, and royalty platforms pay monthly.
  • Where do you live? Many platforms are limited by country. Tutor.com only accepts tutors from the US, and TikTok's Creator Rewards runs in 8 countries. Check the options for your country, for example Pakistan, India, Nigeria or the Philippines.

Most platforms also require you to be 18 or older and to verify a government ID before your first payout, and the payout account must be in your own name.

The 10 options, ranked for beginners

You answer questionnaires and take part in academic or market research. On Prolific, researchers must pay at least $8 (or £6) an hour, and Prolific recommends $12 (or £9). You can cash out once you have $6 or £6, and after your first four cash-outs payments go instantly to PayPal. Studies arrive in bursts, so expect a few dollars on good days rather than a wage. Points sites such as Swagbucks, YouGov and Toluna pay in gift cards or cash, with a lower and less predictable hourly value. See all microtask and survey sites.

2. Website and app testing

You record your screen and think out loud while using a website or app. UserTesting shows the reward before you accept each test, pays only through PayPal and usually sends money 14 days after the test. Userlytics and Trymata work the same way. Tests depend on your demographics, so sign up to several. Browse testing platforms.

3. AI training work

You rate chatbot answers, compare AI outputs and write example responses. DataAnnotation says general projects start at $25 to $30+ an hour and pays through PayPal within a few days of a request. The catch is entry. The Starter Assessment takes about an hour, you can only take it once, and approval is not guaranteed, so do it when you are rested. Outlier and Alignerr are similar. See AI training platforms.

4. Selling things you already own

Clothes, books, games and electronics you no longer use are the quickest cash for many beginners. Vinted charges sellers no fee (the buyer pays a Buyer Protection fee, 5% plus £0.70 in the UK) and pays you as soon as the buyer confirms the item is fine. eBay, Facebook Marketplace and Mercari cover other markets. This is a one-off boost unless you move into buying to resell. Compare marketplaces like Etsy.

5. Simple services on Fiverr and Upwork

Pick one task you can do well today, such as proofreading, data entry, product listing, basic Canva graphics or subtitles. Fiverr keeps 20% of every order and clears earnings 14 days after completion. Upwork charges a 0% to 15% service fee per contract and sells Connects for bidding at $0.15 each. Hourly earnings become available 10 days after the billing week ends, fixed-price payments 5 days after approval. Expect weeks before the first order. Our guides to getting started on Fiverr and getting started on Upwork walk through the setup.

6. Conversation tutoring

If you speak English fluently, you can be paid to chat with learners. Cambly pays $0.17 a minute ($10.20 an hour), or $0.20 a minute on Cambly Kids, pays weekly and says no teaching certificate, degree or experience is needed. Preply lets you set your own rate but keeps the whole first trial lesson with each new student, then 33% of later lessons, falling to 18% after 400 hours. italki is another option. See how to get students on Preply.

7. Transcription and captions

Rev pays transcriptionists $0.40 to $1.10 per audio minute and captioners $0.54 to $1.10, weekly through PayPal, after a skills test. Rev currently runs a waitlist. Because pay is per audio minute rather than per hour worked, typing speed and accuracy decide your real hourly rate. GoTranscript and Scribie are alternatives in translation and transcription platforms.

8. Microtasks

Short tasks such as tagging images or checking data. This is the lowest-paying option. A peer-reviewed analysis of Amazon Mechanical Turk found a median hourly wage of about $2, with only 4% of workers earning more than $7.25 an hour. MTurk also holds a new worker's earnings until they have been active for 10 days. Clickworker pays weekly through PayPal, Payoneer, SEPA or ACH. Use microtasks only when nothing better is open to you.

9. Local shifts and delivery

Not online work, but booked through an app with no interview. Amazon says most Amazon Flex drivers earn $18 to $25 an hour before vehicle costs, and you can choose daily payment, though you must be 21 or older. Instawork is free to use and shows the hourly rate before you book a shift. Wonolo says 98% of jobs are paid within 48 hours. See shift work apps.

10. Designs and photos

Slow, but it builds something that keeps earning. Redbubble is free, needs five public designs before your shop goes live, takes a 20% or 50% platform fee depending on your account tier and pays monthly once you pass $10. Shutterstock pays 15% to 40% of each license, never less than $0.10 a download, monthly from a minimum you choose between $25 and $2,000. Start with our Redbubble and Shutterstock guides.

Your first steps this week

  1. Open a payout account in your own name. PayPal works for most options above, and our guide to receiving payments with Payoneer covers countries where PayPal is limited.
  2. Join Prolific and UserTesting, fill in every profile question and check for studies twice a day.
  3. Set aside a quiet hour for the DataAnnotation Starter Assessment, since there are no retakes.
  4. Photograph and list five things you no longer use on Vinted or Facebook Marketplace.
  5. Pick one simple service and publish a Fiverr Gig or an Upwork profile with a real sample of your work.
  6. Log every hour and every dollar in a spreadsheet. After two weeks, drop whatever pays least per hour.

How to move beyond beginner pay

Paid-per-task work rarely grows. The options that grow are the ones where you build a record, such as reviews on Fiverr or Upwork, returning students on Preply or a portfolio of designs. Keep your expectations realistic. In Pew Research Center's 2021 survey, 16% of US adults had ever earned money through online gig platforms, and only 31% of current or recent gig workers said it had been their main job over the past year. Treat the first months as side income while you pick the one skill that clients pay the most for, then move toward the best freelance sites for that skill.

What to avoid

  • Paying to get work. The FTC says honest employers never ask you to pay to get a job. Fees for training, certificates, "starter kits" or job lists are warning signs.
  • Task scams. Apps that pay you small amounts for liking videos or rating products, then ask you to deposit money to unlock bigger earnings, are fraud. The FTC counted about 20,000 task scam reports in the first half of 2024, up from none identified in 2020.
  • Fake checks. A "client" sends a check, asks you to return part of it, and the check later bounces, leaving you liable.
  • Promises of thousands a month for little effort. No real platform above pays like that for beginners.
  • Taking clients off the platform. Upwork and Fiverr both penalise moving payments off-site, and you lose their payment protection.
  • Counting on creator income. TikTok's Creator Rewards needs 10,000 followers and 100,000 views in the last 30 days before it pays anything. See the Creator Rewards guide.

Frequently asked questions

Can I really make money online with no experience?

Yes, but expect small amounts at first. Research studies, app testing, selling what you own and conversation tutoring need no track record. Prolific's minimum is $8 an hour and Cambly pays $10.20 an hour. Higher pay usually comes after you build reviews or pass an assessment, for example on DataAnnotation, where general projects start at $25 to $30+ an hour.

What is the easiest online job for beginners?

Paid research studies on Prolific are the simplest to start, because you only need to read carefully and answer honestly. Website testing on UserTesting is similar but asks you to speak your thoughts aloud. Neither guarantees steady work, so beginners usually join several platforms at once.

How much can a beginner earn online per day?

It depends on hours and availability, not just the platform. At Cambly's $10.20 an hour, two hours a day is about $20. Studies and tests arrive in bursts, so daily totals vary. Microtasks can pay far less, as one MTurk study found a median of about $2 an hour.

Do I need to pay anything to start earning online?

No. Every option in this guide is free to join, apart from small costs such as Upwork Connects at $0.15 each. Any job that asks you to pay for training, a starter kit or access to tasks before you earn is a warning sign, according to the FTC.

Which beginner option pays the fastest?

Selling something you own is usually fastest, and Vinted pays as soon as the buyer confirms. Prolific pays instantly to PayPal after your first four cash-outs. Freelance marketplaces are slower, with Fiverr clearing earnings 14 days after an order completes.
