Professionals usually earn more online through vetted networks, paid expert calls and specialist AI training than through open job boards. Open marketplaces such as Upwork are the fastest way in, but you compete on price and pay 0% to 20% in fees. Vetted networks such as Toptal and Gun.io take no cut from your rate, but they accept only a small share of applicants and can take weeks to screen you.
How to choose
- Proof of seniority. Vetted networks and expert networks want years of relevant work that you can show. Open marketplaces accept newer professionals and let reviews do the vetting.
- Startup cost. Everything here is free to join. Upwork charges $0.15 per Connect to bid, and Contra's optional Pro plan costs $29 a month.
- Time to first payment. Upwork releases fixed-price payments 5 days after approval. Gun.io pays weekly on net 30 terms, AlphaSights' standard terms are 30 days, and Mercor pays every Wednesday. On HackerOne, the provisional timeline is about two weeks from report to bounty.
- Where you live. Most options below work worldwide. Toptal pays only in US dollars, and some Upwork jobs are limited to U.S. or U.K. freelancers with an identity badge.
- Fees versus rates. A 20% fee on a high rate can still beat a 0% fee on a network that sends little work. Compare what you keep per month, not the headline commission.

Open marketplaces: fastest start, most competition
Upwork shows its 0% to 15% Freelancer Service Fee on each contract before you commit. Upwork says complete profiles are 4.5 times more likely to be hired, and Top Rated status needs a Job Success Score of 90% and $1,000 earned in 12 months.
Fiverr keeps 20% but lets buyers come to you, and some categories have floor prices, such as $100 for a full mobile app, while others are vetted-only.
Contra is commission-free for freelancers. Its Pro plan costs $29 a month or $199 a year and waives client payment fees. Start with how to get started on Upwork or on Fiverr.
Vetted networks: higher rates, harder entry
Toptal says fewer than 3% of applicants are accepted. Its five stages pass 26.4% of applicants at the language and personality step, 7.4% at the skill review, 3.6% at the live screening and 3.2% after a test project lasting one to three weeks. The whole process takes 3 to 8 weeks. Members set their own rate, Toptal "does not take a cut from that", and work is full-time (40 hours a week), part-time (20 hours) or hourly, paid in US dollars.
Gun.io says about 100 of every 1,000 monthly applicants are approved after algorithmic screening, a work-history review and a live interview with a senior engineer. You are paid exactly the rate you request, weekly, on net 30 terms.
Arc.dev tells clients its freelance developers cost $15 to $110 or more an hour. For WordPress,
Codeable runs its own vetting. See our full list of vetted networks for senior talent.
Expert networks: paid calls about what you know
Investors and consulting firms pay expert networks to set up short calls with people who know an industry. At
AlphaSights you set your own hourly rate, although it warns that high rates usually mean fewer requests, and you are paid pro-rata for the time you spend with clients. Its standard payment terms are 30 days, by bank transfer, cheque in the US and Canada, or a charity donation.
GLG pays US experts by direct deposit or prepaid card, and experts elsewhere mainly by wire transfer or international direct deposit. Register with several networks, because requests only come when a project matches your background. Never share your current employer's confidential information on a call. Compare them in best expert networks for paid consultations.
AI training for specialists
AI labs need professionals to write and check hard questions.
DataAnnotation lists $75 to $150 or more an hour for software, backend, DevOps and machine-learning engineers, $75 to $125 or more for finance, legal, medical and data specialists, and $60 to $125 or more for healthcare operations and cybersecurity roles.
Mercor contracts are in US dollars and pay every Wednesday for the previous week, through Stripe Connect (instant payout for a 1% fee) or through Wise where Stripe is unavailable. Work comes in projects, so treat it as a strong side income rather than a guaranteed salary. Browse best AI training platforms.
Security skills: bug bounties
On
HackerOne, the minimum bounty a program can award is $50 and each program publishes its own table by severity. HackerOne's network had paid out more than $230 million in bounties by December 2022. Web3 platform
Immunefi had paid $100.21 million across more than 3,000 reports, including a single $10 million bounty for a flaw in Wormhole's cross-chain protocol. Most researchers earn far less than the headlines, and duplicates are common. Read how to earn your first bug bounty on HackerOne and compare best bug bounty platforms.
Competitions and prizes
Kaggle hosts data science competitions, including ARC Prize 2026, which offers more than $2 million across three tracks. Competition is intense: of 23.29 million Kaggle accounts in April 2025, 612 had reached Grandmaster.
Wazoku Crowd, formerly InnoCentive, says it has awarded more than $60 million to solvers across 2,500+ challenges. See best prize competitions.
Products instead of hours
- Sell templates on
Notion Marketplace, which charges 8% plus $0.40 per sale, or in the template marketplaces section. - Sell 3D models on
TurboSquid, which pays a 40% royalty, rising to as much as 80% for exclusive content. - Maintain open source and accept sponsors on
GitHub Sponsors, which charges no fee on sponsorships from personal accounts and pays in 140+ countries and regions.
Mentoring and licensed work
Developers and designers can charge for 1-on-1 sessions on
Codementor or
MentorCruise. Codementor charges $1 per PayPal payout to U.S. accounts and 2% (minimum $1, maximum $20) internationally. Licensed therapists can see clients through online therapy platforms, which require a valid licence where the client lives.
First steps this week
- Choose your model: hourly client work, retainers, paid calls or products.
- Rewrite your portfolio or LinkedIn around three case studies with measurable results.
- Apply to one vetted network now, because screening can take 3 to 8 weeks.
- Register with two or three expert networks and list your past employers, roles and markets precisely.
- Take one AI-training assessment in your specialty.
- Publish a focused Upwork or Contra profile for one core service while you wait.
- If you live outside the US, set up a USD payout route. See Payoneer vs Wise for freelancers.
What to avoid
- Chat-only "job offers". A recruiter who hires you after a text interview and then asks you to buy equipment from their vendor, or to deposit a cheque and send part back, is running a scam.
- Free "test projects" from unknown clients. A vetting network's published test stage is normal. An unknown client who wants a full deliverable free is not.
- Paying for guaranteed placement. None of the networks above charges professionals to join.
- Leaving Upwork with a client too early. Upwork's Conversion Fee is 13.5% of a year of estimated earnings, and skipping it can get you permanently suspended.
- Breaking confidentiality. A paid call is never worth a breach of your employment contract or NDA.
