What works in Ghana, and how the money gets to you
Earnings are in cedis (GHS), and MTN mobile money wallets can receive transfers from abroad through services such as Xoom. PayPal access is limited: in August 2025 the government said it had formally reopened engagement with PayPal to restore full access for Ghanaian users. Alternatives include Payoneer, which Upwork and Fiverr both support, plus Grey and Chipper Cash, which both serve Ghana. Tip: the E-Levy on electronic and mobile money transfers was repealed in April 2025, so moving money between wallets and bank accounts no longer carries that tax.

People and the online economy in Ghana

- 61% of people are of working age (15 to 64), and a large young generation (35% under 15) is coming up behind them.
- Most adults (81%) have a bank or mobile-money account, so a local payout is usually within reach.
- GDP per person is about $3,257 a year, so pay in US dollars or euros from global platforms can go a long way.

Frequently asked questions
What are the best freelance and gig platforms in Ghana?
Upwork and Fiverr connect Ghanaian freelancers with international clients, and Zindi pays data scientists through prize competitions. Locally, Bolt recruits ride-hailing drivers, ShaQ Express hires couriers across all 16 regions, Jumia lets businesses sell online, and Jiji is a classifieds marketplace for selling goods.
How do freelancers in Ghana get paid by international clients?
Options include Payoneer, supported by both Upwork and Fiverr, Upwork's direct transfer to a local bank for $0.99 where available, and USD wires for $50. Grey and Chipper Cash both serve Ghana, and money sent from abroad through Xoom can land directly in MTN and other mobile money wallets.
Does PayPal work in Ghana?
Not fully. In August 2025 Ghana's communications ministry said it had formally reopened engagement with PayPal to restore full access to its service for Ghanaian users, after PayPal's regional team issued a compliance roadmap in June 2025. Until full access returns, Payoneer, Grey or Chipper Cash are the practical alternatives for receiving foreign payments.
Can people in Ghana work on Upwork and Fiverr?
Yes. Upwork operates worldwide except Russia and Belarus, and the name on your withdrawal account must match your verified Upwork name. Fiverr requires sellers to be at least 18 to withdraw, and since each payout method has its own location restrictions, Ghanaian sellers can use bank transfer via Payoneer or a Payoneer account.
Is there still a tax on mobile money transfers in Ghana?
No. The E-Levy on electronic transfers, including mobile money, was scrapped. Finance Minister Cassiel Ato Forson announced the repeal in the 2025 budget, and President John Mahama signed the repeal bill on 2 April 2025, so wallet and bank transfers no longer carry the levy.
