Frequently asked questions
What are the best freelance and gig platforms in the Netherlands?
Temper for flexible shifts in hospitality, logistics and retail, Charly Cares for babysitting, Hoofdkraan for freelance assignments, Marktplaats and bol for selling, and Upwork or Fiverr for international clients.
How do freelancers in the Netherlands get paid by international clients?
Upwork pays to Dutch bank accounts in EUR via Direct to Local Bank for USD 0.99 per withdrawal, and also offers PayPal and Payoneer. Fiverr pays via PayPal (no fee, USD 1 minimum) or Payoneer. On Temper, DirectPay releases earnings once the client confirms your checkout, for a 2.9% fee.
Does PayPal work in the Netherlands?
Yes, fully. Dutch PayPal accounts can send and receive payments, receiving personal payments is free without currency conversion, and withdrawals to a Dutch bank account are free when no conversion is involved.
Can people in the Netherlands work on Upwork and Fiverr?
Yes. Upwork lists the Netherlands (EUR) for Direct to Local Bank withdrawals and needs the bank account name to match your verified Upwork name. Upwork also accepts digital banks such as Wise for withdrawals, depending on location. Fiverr sellers must be at least 18 to withdraw.
Do small freelancers in the Netherlands have to charge VAT?
Not if they use the kleineondernemersregeling (KOR). Businesses with turnover of no more than EUR 20,000 per calendar year can opt in, then charge no VAT and file no VAT returns, but cannot reclaim VAT on expenses. Since 2025 the fixed three-year term is gone, so you can leave at any time.
