Best freelance, gig and earning platforms in Uganda
In Uganda, mobile money sits alongside bank accounts as a way to get paid. MTN MoMo and Airtel Money are mobile money wallets for receiving and cashing out, and Chipper Cash lists Uganda among its six markets. SafeBoda, operating in Uganda since 2015, offers motorbike and car rides plus package delivery and recruits drivers, while Bolt offers rides and food delivery with sign-up for drivers and couriers. Jiji and Kilimall let people sell goods online, and BrighterMonday and Fuzu list jobs. Money is in Ugandan shillings (UGX). PayPal accounts registered in Uganda can receive payments, but PayPal lists withdrawals only through third-party service providers to a linked bank account or wallet, at 2.0% plus USD 1.50 plus the provider's own fees. Wise sends UGX to individual bank accounts and mobile wallets, up to 30 million UGX per transfer, but not to business accounts for now. Tip: Upwork's Direct to Local Bank does not cover UGX, so set up PayPal, Payoneer or a USD wire before your first payout.

Frequently asked questions
What are the best freelance and gig platforms in Uganda?
SafeBoda for motorbike and car ride driving or deliveries, Bolt for rides and food delivery, Jiji and Kilimall for selling goods online, and BrighterMonday or Fuzu for job listings. Upwork and Fiverr cover remote freelance work.
How do freelancers in Uganda get paid by international clients?
Clients abroad can send UGX through Wise to an individual bank account or a mobile money wallet, up to 30 million UGX per transfer. PayPal also works for receiving, with withdrawals through third-party providers. Upwork does not offer Direct to Local Bank in UGX, so its other methods such as PayPal, Payoneer or a USD wire apply.
Does PayPal work in Uganda?
Yes, with limits. PayPal accounts registered in Uganda can receive payments, and receiving personal payments is free without currency conversion. Withdrawals are listed only through third-party service providers to a linked bank account or wallet, at 2.0% plus USD 1.50, and the provider may add its own fees.
Can people in Uganda work on Upwork and Fiverr?
Yes, but plan your payouts. Upwork's Direct to Local Bank list does not include UGX, so methods like PayPal, Payoneer or a USD 50 wire apply, and your payout account name must match your verified Upwork name. Fiverr pays through PayPal or Payoneer, requires you to be 18 to withdraw, and notes location restrictions vary.
Which ride and delivery apps can you work for in Uganda?
SafeBoda, which has operated in Uganda since 2015, recruits drivers for motorbike rides, car rides and package deliveries. Bolt also operates in Uganda with rides, food and grocery delivery, and separate sign-ups for drivers and for couriers, who choose when and how often they deliver.
